Four men have been charged in Germany for allegedly fixing Champions League and Europa League fixtures.
According to reports from the BBC, up to 300 matches in 15 countries are being investigated, with German police looking at 250 suspects. However, the majority of the games involved are at the lower leagues of nine European countries, with only a few involving major European domestic matches.
One of the four men accused is a professional footballer, and they have been in police custody since November last year.
They are said to have made at least several million euros by bribing match officials and players to affect results.
UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino called for severe penalties for those found guilty of match-fixing.
"UEFA will be demanding the harshest of sanctions before the competent courts for any individuals, clubs or officials who are implicated in this malpractice, be it under state or sports jurisdiction," Infantino said according to CNN.
"I would like to thank the German authorities for their action and for the good collaboration.
This case proves that it is possible for a state investigative authority to work closely together with a sports governing body when it comes to corruption or match-fixing", Infantino added.
