Sharapova stunned by Date in Tokyo

Japanese veteran Kimiko Date Krumm upset 12th seed Maria Sharapova in three sets at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Date Krumm, who will turn 40 on Tuesday, won 17 of 21 points from 2-3 0-40 down in the decider to overcome the 23-year-old former world number one from Russia 7-5 3-6 6-3.
The 39-year-old wild card's reward will be a second-round date with Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova.
In other early first-round action, Date Krumm's compatriot Kurumi Nara did not fare so well, going down 4-6 6-2 6-1 to Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.

In the second round, third seed Jelena Jankovic advanced smoothly with a straight-sets victory over Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko.
Jankovic, the world number six, received a first-round bye and triumphed 6-4 6-1 to continue her progress.
Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded six, also advanced with the minimum fuss by overcoming Belarus' Olga Govortsova 6-2 6-3 in round two.
Another former world number one did progress, however, Serbia's Ana Ivanovic cruising past Russia's Alisa Kleybanova 6-3 6-2.
But there was more misery for Dinara Safina whose fall from grace continued with a 6-1 5-7 6-2 defeat to German Julia Goerges.
Tenth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced when Agnes Szavay was forced to retire after seven games, as did 13th seed Shahar Peer, although she was forced to battle for a 5-7 7-5 6-4 win against Timea Bacsinszky.
Nadia Petrova, seeded 15, is out though after going down 7-5 6-4 to Italian Roberta Vinci.
