Johann Cryuff feels Lionel Messi would have escaped injury if Barcelona had taken their chances against Atletico Madrid.
Barca managed to carve out a narrow 2-1 win and Messi was injured while trying to run down the clock by taking the ball close to the corner flag.
In a bid to win the ball back, Atletico Madrid defender Tomas Ujafalusi injured the mercurial Argentinean with a poor tackle. Writing in his El Periodico column, Cryuff felt if the Catalans had put the game to bed earlier, Messi would not been injured.
"Probably if we had closed the match with the many chances we had, Lionel Messi would not have gone off on a stretcher and would have avoided the ugly ankle injury from [Tomas] Ujfalusi.
"If Messi, [David] Villa or Pedro had been successful, or had not been stopped by [David] de Gea, Messi would not have left the stadium on crutches."
Messi will miss two matches due to the injury - news that would have come as a huge relief to the club after initial fears of a broken ankle.
